Elephants capture, marking campaign open

Luanda – A campaign to capture forest elephants for placing GPS collars started on March 5th, in Cuanza Norte province, in an initiative of the National Institute of Biodiversity and Conservation Areas (INBAC), attached to the Ministry of the Environment.,

This information was disclosed to ANGOP this Tuesday, in Luanda by the institute’s general director, Aristofanes Pontes, stressing that the campaign will end on the March 15th and it is held within the scope of the implementation of the activities of the National Action Plan for the species of the Man-Elephant Conflict Conservation and Mitigation Project.

Aristofanes Pontes said that the project is being implemented by the Kissama Foundation, aiming to develop a monitoring model to elephants, with the objective to discover the ecological corridor, studying their behavior, as well as protecting and preserving the populations of this species that are subject in poaching actions.

The official explained that the campaign implementation has the support of the local Government and the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), taking into account its great ecological, cultural and economic significance.

He stressed that the action still arises because these animals are facing the loss and degradation of their habitats, thus increasing the levels of conflict between Man and Elephant and its reduction caused by poaching actions.
